What these checks mean for you

If you’re a retired member

We will:

  • check the amount you’re paid

  • increase your pension, if necessary

If you’re due a higher pension, you might also be due a small one-off back payment (with interest). This is for any extra pension you should have got in the past.

We’ll write to you at the end of 2025 to let you know if you’re due a higher pension and, if you are, how much it will be.

If you have not retired yet

We will:

  • check your pension at your normal retirement date

  • increase your pension from when its starts to be paid, if necessary

If you have a spouse’s pension

If you’re the husband, wife or civil partner of an original member of the Scheme:

  • you get a spouse’s pension

  • your pension is based on theirs

If they built up any GMP after 17 May 1990, we need to work out how much they would have built up if they were the opposite sex.

If their overall pension would have been:

  • higher, we will increase your pension

  • lower or the same, there will be no change to the pension you’re getting

If you’re due a higher pension, you might also be due a small one-off back payment (with interest). This is for any extra pension you should have got in the past.

We’ll write to you at the end of 2025 to let you know if you’re due a higher pension and, if you are, how much it will be.

If you transferred your pension from another scheme into this one

We will check if the legal judgment about GMP means the value of the pension you transferred into this Scheme should have been higher. If it should have been higher, we will contact you.

If you are a member of another pension scheme

We have started the process of checking GMP in our Scheme. Most other schemes want to start and complete the process as soon as possible. However, there is no deadline for schemes to check GMP and update pensions.

If you’re part of another pension scheme that needs to check GMP, it’s up to that scheme to decide the best time to do it.

They will contact you if you’re affected.

You need to tell us if you have pension protection

If the total value of all your pensions is more than £1 million, you might have to pay extra tax. Some people in this situation have extra protection from HMRC, to help reduce that tax. If you have this kind of protection, please make sure you tell us.

You can check if you have protection on the HMRC website. Click ‘Check your existing protection’ and log in with your HMRC login details.
